Katarina Witt first began to skate at the age 5 years. Then, her talent were evident and she was accepted to Karl-Marx Stadt's special schools. In this school, she was introduced to her teacher Jutta Muler. Witt achieved her breakthrough when she was ranked second in the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Her elegance and grace caught everybody's eye at that time, and from then forward she began to dominate the competition. Olympic success At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt won a close fought contest to win the women's figure skating gold medal. In a tighter competition afterward, she took home the gold medal. The free skater was unable to win however, she took home the gold medal for the figure that was compulsory as well as her program was short. Witt is the first female figure skater who has won the same competition twice, after Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following a career that was successful as an actress. Witt was seventh in the competition, and she delighted fans despite not winning the medal. Witt was elected to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in the year 1995.
