The meaning that adults have in biology means an animal that is capable of reproduction. For humans adults have significance that is shaped by social and legal concepts. In contrast to a person who is not considered an adult or "minor" an legal adult has attained majority, making them self-sufficient competent, responsible, and capable. Legal adults can also be called a major. 18.18 is the norm for legal age for adulthood, although this may differ depending on country and status in law, and also mental maturity.

Adulthood refers to the period in the human lifespan when the person is at maturity both in physical and mental growth. The term "adulthood" is generally believed to start around age 20 or 21 years. Middle age starts at approximately 40 and then it is followed by an elderly age of 60. In adulthood there are three distinct stages: Early adulthood (18-30 years), Middle Adulthood (30-60 years) and Late adulthood (60%-60%). At the point we are in the age of early adulthood (20 to early 40s), our physical maturation is completed, though the size and weight of our bodies may increase slightly. Our physical capabilities are peaking at the age of young adulthood. This is reflected in muscle strength in addition to reflex time, the sensors, and the heart's function.
